Migraine Headache Treatment
Severe, throbbing headaches that are brought on by certain triggers are known as migraine headaches. These debilitating headaches affect 10-15% of adults in the U.S., often causing chronic pain that can interrupt their lives. There is not a cure for migraine headaches, but there are treatment plans that can control pain and minimize episode frequency. Our pain physicians at CLEAR Wellness Group offer innovative migraine headache treatment for patients at our clinic in Chicago.
Causes and Symptoms of Migraine Headaches
Migraine headaches do not have a known cause, but they have been linked to hereditary factors. A family history of migraines can increase your risk. A variety of “triggers” are linked to migraine episodes, including stress, chemicals, stimulants, foods, hormones and sensory stimuli. Each person may have different triggers, and identifying them can help patients avoid or control their exposure to limit migraine episodes.
Migraine headaches are different than the more common tension headache. The pain usually begins on only one side of the head and the pain starts as a dull ache, increasing to throbbing and severe pain. Migraines do not only impact the head, but they also have a wide variety of symptoms, including:
- Nausea and loss of appetite
- Sensitivity to light or sound
- Feeling warm or cold
- Vomiting or stomach pain
Migraine headaches can last from a few hours to a few days. Since the symptoms can be debilitating, those with severe migraines need treatment to control their pain and episode frequency.
There are a variety of treatments that have been effective at controlling migraines. They can include Botox® injections, ketamine infusions and other therapies. Each patient varies on which treatments work best for their episodes.
