Spinal Cord Stimulators to Treat Pain
The spinal cord is the nerve highway to the brain that transmits pain and other nerve information. These nerve signals are delivered to the spinal cord from nerves throughout the body, many connecting to the spinal cord at various spots on the spine. Electrical impulses can interrupt nerve signals to the spinal cord, including pain signals. Spinal cord stimulators use this method by targeting specific nerves that relay pain to the brain. At CLEAR Wellness Group, we offer spinal cord stimulators to treat pain at our medical facility in Chicago.
A spinal cord stimulator (SCS) is a device that is implanted close to the spine near targeted nerves that relay chronic pain for the patient. The device emits electrical impulses that can interrupt or change pain signals that are sent to the spinal cord and brain. Patients can control the level of electrical pulses with a remote control, increasing the intensity to control pain as needed.
Spinal cord stimulators have been used successfully for many patients who have chronic pain that does not respond well to other treatments. Back pain, sciatica and some neuropathy pain can be managed with SCS. Most people experience less pain or a tingling sensation with the use of spinal cord stimulators.
Are You a Good Candidate for SCS?
Not everyone responds to SCS the same or has the same results. Since the device must be implanted into the tissue near the spinal cord, it is important to determine if a patient will experience pain reduction. If you have chronic pain that is not well-managed and treatment options are limited, SCS may be a treatment that can be explored. A trial with a temporary SCS device that is placed on the outside of the body is used to determine whether or not a patient responds well to this pain management treatment.
